Early Years Foundation Stage - Learning Through Play

Our nurseries in England follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old.

There is an emphasis on children learning through interaction with people and exploring the world around them. EYFS identifies the individuality, efforts and achievements of children and recognises that learning and development take place during each different activity, encouraging them to be lifelong learners.

Within the learning and development section of the EYFS there are seven areas of learning and development which we use to shape the educational programmes in our nurseries, as below.

If you would like to know more information about the EYFS, visit the Foundation Years website.

Children are observed and experiences are provided to promote learning outcome based upon the following 7 areas:

Prime Areas

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Art and Design
